Learn the parts of the taro plant with the Nane ʻĀpana (Jigsaw Puzzle): Kalo (Taro) Bundle!
Kalo plays an integral role in many indigenous cultures around the world. As kānaka Hawaiʻi, we consider ourselves direct descendants of Hāloa, the taro plant. In learning about kalo, keiki deepen their relationship with their ancestor, and in turn, can mālama (take care of) it as such.
This puzzle was intentionally left with its natural wood grain giving the option to customize with color. Beneath each piece is the name of the part in Hawaiian.
Paired with our Kalo Book Bundle:
E ʻAi i ka Poi - Learn the Hawaiian vocabulary associated with the process of making poi from pulling the kalo out of the ground, washing it with water, cooking it in the pot, peeling the skin with an ʻopihi shell, pounding the kalo with a poi pounder, mixing with water and finally eating the poi.
I Mea Aha Ke Kalo? - I Mea Aha Ke Kalo is a beginner reader book in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi which introduces young keiki to the vocabulary and concepts related to growing kalo, one of the staple crops cherished by our kūpuna and beloved by our people today. Through simple language and beautiful photographs, this book nurtures an early love for the Hawaiian language and connects readers to the rich traditions of kalo cultivation.
